Kelly did not start paddling until the age of 13 when asked to try it . Once he started he couldn't get away from it. When he moved to the island of Oahu for school, Kelly got into one-man paddling competitively. After 2 years of training, he had finished 3rd in the Catalina relay, California's biggest race. Other accomplishments in this young paddlers career include 2nd place in the State championships, 7th in the Moloka'i relay and 11th overall in the Moloka'i solo world championships.
