From his first day in an outrigger-canoe at age eleven, Luke knew that his life would never be the same. By the time he was fourteen, Luke was spending all of his spare time on the water. In 2003 Luke moved to Southern California's Inland Empire in an attempt to forcefully remove himself from the ocean in order to concentrate on getting an education at Claremont McKenna College. After a month away from the water, he found a reservoir near his school and a guy willing to loan him his canoe. Within a couple of weeks he was back to training daily, only instead of a beautiful Hawaiian ocean, he was stuck doing circles in a dirty reservoir. After a year of training in the reservoir, Luke was among the top paddlers in California, placing among the top three in every California race in 2005. After two years and an approximated 2500 laps of the reservoir, Luke transferred back home to the University of Hawai'i. His attempt at concentrating solely on school had failed, but in the process he discovered that he could never be separated from the ocean again. Since 2003, he has raced across the Moloka'i channel eleven times, more than anybody else his age. Last year he won the one-man canoe Hawai'i State Championships, came in 6th place in the Moloka'i Relay, and finished in 12th place for the Moloka'i Solo World Championships. He is currently training upwards of 20 hours a week while pursuing a degree in History with a minor in Business at the University of Hawai'i.
