The place is Camden, NJ. A city where hope and hopelessness don't mind being on the same block, as long as one doesn't interfere with the others’ game plan.
Leon Freeman walks these streets even today; you can usually find him on 38th St. This is his block. He can call it his block because he gives it a voice. He’s a watcher, an intermediary. As a child growing up in Ferry Station (now Tamarack) apartments, influences like Nas, Redman and Wu-Tang Clan made it crystal clear which path he would follow. At the age of nine, the path began in his bedroom, studying the classics, finding the voice that would speak loudly for his city, and his culture.
As a teenager, V.S. moved with his family to Pennsauken, NJ., a town just outside of East Camden. As the mass appeal of hip-hop culture grew globally, so did the ability of the rapper often referred to as “the Rebel.” By the time he completed high school, V.S. was a battle and cipher-tested veteran, with respect and recognition from Philadelphia to New York.
16 years later, the streets still have a voice. He’s still watching. Mix tape appearances all along the East Coast have not taken him off the path. Shows, beefs, interviews and notoriety; it hasn’t fazed him. Moving thousands of units regionally and becoming one of the most respected independent artists in the game has not changed him. A phone call from the CEO of hip-hop himself only upped the ante, but the streets still have their voice. 16 years later, the streets still have something to say.
Whatever the block sees, you see. Check out and purchase his latest mixtape, The Art Museum on myspace.com/verbspielberg.
